Shaundel & Maurice: A Celebration of Love, Legacy, and Joy in La Crosse

There are some weddings that leave a mark long after the final song fades and the last glass is toasted — Shaundel and Maurice’s was one of them.

Held on a warm summer day at Celebrations on the River in La Crosse, this wedding was a bold, joyful, unapologetic celebration of Black love, deep friendship, and chosen family. It was more than a ceremony — it was a cultural moment, complete with a wine-boxing ritual, heartfelt vows (including a memorable “awww” from the groom during vows), and a powerful “jumping the broom” tradition that tied past to present.

Both grooms brought elegance and personality to the day — Shaundel in an all-white suit with a regal red cape, and Maurice in a red suit etched with intricate gold patterns from top to bottom. Their style, much like their story, was fearless and full of meaning.

One of the best man’s speeches summed it up best:

“You choose your friends, and friendship is motivated by love… and love always thinks not in terms of itself, but in terms of those who we love. And I love this guy right here.”

At Boxcar, we had the immense honor of capturing both photo and video for this event. We were intentional in sending our associate team — talented Black and Parisian photographers — because representation matters. For us, it wasn’t just about documenting the day; it was about showing up with heart and respect for the community we were serving.

Subtle as it may be, it feels right to share that Shaundel has since gone on to become the Mayor of La Crosse — and remains the passionate founder of Black La Crosse, an initiative dedicated to supporting and uplifting the city’s Black community. His impact is undeniable, and his joy on this day was electric.
