Jordan and Carly’s Door County Elopement and More

“And more” seems like a good heading for this blog because when I first met Jordan and Carly, they had planned for a very different wedding. Then, well, you know…the world changed, and as it would happen, their wedding was spilt into an elopement and then to a reception later in Minneapolis.

The “and more” part comes into play because I got to know so much more about them as a couple over time. I got to bond with Jordan about our love for video games and found out that Carly and I love old houses. And let’s not forget that I had months and months to follow their adventures with their Goldendoodle Chewy; that dog is pure joy.

These two have a love language that runs from awkward to dark to loving sarcasm, and I am there for that. I got to know more about their extraordinary satirical senses of humor. How they manage to be both funny and uplifting, and they never take themselves too seriously. Over the time they hired me through their wedding reception, we had so many laughs together that I felt like I had known them forever by the time their wedding came.

I can’t go so far to say that I am glad we had to live through a worldwide pandemic, but I can say that it’s taught me that getting to know my clients well before their wedding has become even more important to me than it was before.

  • The Duluth Depot: A historic train station with stunning architecture, perfect for an elegant urban elopement.

2. Planning Your Elopement

Legal Requirements Before you can say “I do,” ensure you meet Minnesota’s legal requirements for marriage:

  • Marriage License: Obtain a marriage license from any Minnesota County Recorder’s Office. You and your partner must both be present, and the license is valid for six months.
  • Age and Identification: Both parties must be at least 18 years old and provide valid identification. If under 18, additional requirements apply.

Officiant Choose an officiant who is authorized to perform weddings in Minnesota. This can be a local officiant, a friend, or even a judge. Make sure to discuss your preferences and ensure they are available on your chosen date.

Witnesses Minnesota requires two witnesses to sign your marriage license. You can invite a couple of close friends or family members to join you on your special day.

3. Enhancing Your Elopement Experience

Photography Capture your special moments with a professional photographer who knows the Duluth area. Look for someone experienced in elopements and familiar with the local landscapes. Benjamin Strong, an internationally renowned photographer, offers elopement photography services that highlight the beauty of your chosen location.

Accommodations Duluth offers a range of accommodations for your stay. Consider staying at:

  • The Inn on Lake Superior: A lakeside hotel with beautiful views and proximity to downtown.
  • The Sheraton Duluth Hotel: Offering modern amenities and comfortable lodging in the heart of the city.

Celebratory Meal After your ceremony, enjoy a celebratory meal at one of Duluth’s fine dining establishments:

  • The Duluth Grill: Known for its farm-to-table dishes and cozy atmosphere.
  • Va Bene Caffé: Offering delicious Italian cuisine with lake views.

4. Additional Tips

Weather Considerations Duluth’s weather can be unpredictable, so plan accordingly. If you’re eloping outdoors, have a backup plan in case of rain or cold temperatures.

Permits Some locations, especially state parks and popular tourist spots, may require a permit for weddings. Check with local authorities or park services to ensure you have the necessary permissions.

Local Vendors Consider incorporating local vendors into your elopement for a true Duluth experience. From florists to caterers, local businesses can add a special touch to your day.

Conclusion

Wedding Receptions at Mintahoe at Solar Arts Minnesota

This gorgeous location was the perfect choice for their wedding reception because it merged all the things they love; a great downtown location and lots of architecture so we could geek out at how cool this building was. I was so excited to photograph there!

The Solar Arts Building in Minneapolis is a multi-purpose arts center that offers various services to the community. The building was originally opened in 1915 as the Minneapolis Public Library and later served as the city’s first YWCA. It underwent a major renovation in 2006 and reopened as the Solar Arts Building. Today, the building is home to a variety of arts organizations and a great place to hold an urban wedding in Minneapolis.

The reception was as much fun as we had hoped.  So many shared laughs (and shared drinks) and seriously the most enormous dessert table I have ever seen!

It was a pleasure to get to know you guys, Carly and Jordan. I hope your wedding photos remind you of what a great day both of your celebrations were…and more.
